Thank you to everyone who joined us at MESERB’s 2024 Summer Conference! It was great to see wastewater professionals from across the state come together to exchange ideas and support the research, study, and analysis of water quality issues important to Minnesota communities.

During the event, members heard from an insightful slate of presenters and enjoyed ample time to mingle with fellow attendees. Cooper Silburn, an Associate Attorney from Flaherty & Hood, presented a regulatory update for members to highlight the work that MESERB has completed in the last year and foreshadow the work that needs to be done in the next. After lunch, members heard from HR Green engineers Bridget Osborn and Kyle Sandberg about their innovative Alum Treatment Facility addressing excessive nutrient loading in the South Washington Watershed District.

Elizabeth Wefel, a Senior Attorney and Lobbyist from Flaherty & Hood, provided a retrospective of what ended up being an unexpectedly dynamic legislative session. Daniel Marx, Shareholder Attorney at Flaherty & Hood, shared his insight into how complex new regulations have strained agreements between facilities and significant industrial users, highlighting ways that members can strengthen and maintain those relationships.

Finally, MPCA’s Nicole Blasing, Municipal Division Director, and Sheryl Bock, Municipal Wastewater Technical Services Unit Supervisor, provided updates on the agency’s work on nitrogen, sulfate, and PFAS. Key projects that MESERB will remain involved in from the agency’s presentation include the implementation of the Wastewater Nitrogen Reduction and Implementation Strategy, the development of site-specific standards for the Mississippi River pools, and the implementation of the MPCA’s interim biosolids strategy.
